About me

I am a web developer and information professional, currently working in an astronomy library. As a librarian, my passion is finding and conveying information; as a technologist, I love working with tools to get things done.

My areas of expertise are:

  • delivering web content (HTML5, CSS, javascript)
  • creating and maintaining applications (PHP, python, and javascript, using TDD)
  • storing, manipulating, and retrieving information in relational databases, including for reporting purposes (MySQL, MS SQL Server, SQLite, Sybase ASE)
  • transferral of information from one schema / format / serialization to another (JSON, XML, CSV, SQL, programming language objects)
  • producing and consuming content programmatically using HTTP (RESTful APIs)
  • data visualization (d3.js)
  • process automation

On a more personal note, I also have a particular passion for natural languages and linguistics. I am a native English speaker, and I learned Spanish in university. I am currently learning Irish and German. (Over the years I’ve attempted several other languages and since forgotten what I learned… maybe one day I’ll fix that!) A couple of language-related twitter projects I’ve done for fun are @ProtoIEbot, which tweets modern-language words sharing the same Proto-Indo-European root; and @PictiuirFoclora, which (manually) tweets Irish-language vocabulary with accompanying pictures. I especially love the latter project because its images are always properly licensed under Creative Commons, and it’s a way of promoting what a fantastic resource Wikimedia Commons is. I am also a Wiktionary contributor.

When I’m not studying my language flashcards, I’m probably walking my dogs, reading a book, playing an indie video game, or cooking with my wife.
